The Musandam peninsula is an exclave of Oman, separated by the United Arab Emirates from the rest of the world. Musandam is known for his invigorating drift diving. Scuba diving in Musandam is ideal for experienced divers searching for a special dive destination. Musandam is an arid, wild destination which can be reached from Dubai with a three hour road transfer. The only sizeable population developing there is Dibba and Khasab, a small town. The coast is defined by enormous cliffs formed in fjords that fall scenically into the sea.
The waters which surround the Straights of Hormuz and Musandam Oman provide very fine coral reef diving. The plankton rich waters host over 900 species of fish, ranging from cleaner wrasse to whale sharks. There are more than 25 dive sites which have been developed. Musandam is a remote area which does not allow commercial fishing. When the divers enter the sea, they note the abundance of marine life immediately and a lasting impression is made on them.
Also the architecture of the dive sites varies, from large coral gardens to walls. The combination of heavy tidal currents and plankton like eagle and manta rays and whale sharks attracts a wide variety of marine species. Dolphins enjoy the calm waters of the Musandam fjords, and frequently follow the dive vessels. Divers also meet several turtle species and many shark species. Underwater visibility is the trade off for the overwhelming diversity of pelagic life that typically exists within a range of 12 to 20 metres.
