Jebel Akhdar, Oman means Green Mountain, but you may wonder why, as you climb the gray and burnt orange sides of its slate, it is barren except for a few thorny dried bushes. The green refers to the Saiq Plateau villages, 2000 m above sea level, where ample rainfall allows pomegranates, grapes, peaches, apricots, and roses to grow for the rose water used in Omani sweets and as perfume. Spring is the best time to visit when the roses are in bloom and the terrace plantations are a vibrant green.

Ahlan Arabia Tours is a growing company in Oman. We offers best Jebel Akhdar Tour Packages. We will enable you to discover secret wadis and terraces where apricots, pomegranates, walnuts and roses grow in cooler temperatures at high altitude. You can also enjoy panoramic views of the mountains, small traditional villages and rose-water distilleries. Due to its remote location and rugged terrain, the region, a two-hour drive from Oman‘s Muscat capital, is often overlooked. Those making the trek there, however, will glimpse authentic Omani villages and take in sweeping mountain views.

The region is about a 45-minute drive from Nizwa and is renowned for its traditional extraction of rose water and agricultural products including pomegranate, apricot, peach and nut. The Jebel is populated mainly by the ancient Arab tribe Bani Riyam (al-Riyamy). Most of the tribe’s descendants are now in nearby towns like Nizwa and Izki; a few live Ibra. Between 1957 and 1959, the region became a Jebel Akhdar War site, a confrontation between Omani forces loyal to Oman’s sultan (helped by British troops, including the Special Air Service) and Saudi Arabia-backed rebel forces from Oman’s inland Imamate.

Sultan Qaboos declared Jebel Akhdar, Oman a nature reserve in August 2011, in an attempt to protect its rare yet fragile biodiversity. The ‘Jebel Akhdar Sanctuary for Natural Sceneries’ was created by a Royal Court decree. The mountain has featured as the main climb in the road bicycle race of the Tour of Oman since 2011. Several important rock art sites have been discovered and studied in the region, whose most ancient figures date back to 6000 years ago.
